On behalf of all Victorians I’d like to welcome you to the 2009 Parliament of the World’s Religions. In particular, may I extend a special welcome to those of you who have travelled here from interstate and overseas - I hope your stay with us is a happy and memorable one.

世界宗教國會是全世界最龐大的多宗教信仰聚會。祂也是最包融的［聚會］之一。祂把來自80餘個國家的宗教和國民領袖、和具有信仰、靈性和善心的人民聚集在一起的活動。當此世界宗教國會聚會舉行時，祂的目標是明確的──開發數以千計與會者的思想和觀念，和尋找與我們所有人息息相關的問題之現實解決方法。

The Parliament of the World’s Religions is the world’s largest interfaith gathering. It is also one of the most inclusive. It is an event that brings together religious and civil leaders and people of faith, spirit and goodwill from more than 80 countries. When this Parliament convenes, its aim is clear - to tap into the thoughts and ideas of thousands of participants and find practical solutions to issues that concern us all.

維多利亞州政府對支持2009年世界宗教國會感到很光榮。我們相信沒有比維多利亞州更好或更合適舉辦此活動的地方了。畢竟，我們是著名的澳洲多元文化的首都，和全世界最和平與最尊敬各社會［的地方］。我們是來自超過200個國家，說超過230種語言和方言，追隨超過110個宗教信仰的人們之家。在維多利亞州人民之中，有四分之一是出生於國外的──我們的人口中，差不多一半是在國外出生，或者有一位父親或母親是國外出生。

The Victorian Government is very proud to support the 2009 Parliament of the World’s Religions. We believe that there is no better or appropriate place to host this event than Victoria.  After all, we are well-known as Australia’s multicultural capital and as one of the most peaceful and respectful societies in the world. We are home to people from more than 200 countries of origin, speaking more than 230 languages and dialects, and following more than 110 faiths. One in four Victorians were born overseas - and nearly half our population were either born overseas, or have a parent born overseas.

Our State is as diverse as our population, and I hope you will find the time to appreciate just some of what Melbourne and Victoria have to offer. Whether it be our world-class museums and galleries, our great restaurants, spectacular coastline or historic regional centres such as Ballarat and Bendigo, there is quite literally something for everyone in Victoria.
