Honourable David BartletteMP
Thank you.
Can I firstly acknowledge Your Holiness Master Wang and thank you on behalf of everyone here for your kind invitation. I also acknowledge my parliamentary colleagues, the Honorable Will Hodgeman and his wife Nicola, leader of the Opposition; Nick McKim, leader of the Tasmanian Greens; my friend and colleague, Lisa Singh; and many Mayors, distinguished guests, all of whom you are. Thank you very much for joining us on this lovely evening.
Today is a special day. A special day marked by so many different celebrations. Of course it is Valentine’s Day, perhaps a typically Anglified, if you like, celebration of love. Earlier today Larissa and I were thrilled to be at the Italian club to celebrate the Festival of St Carlos Borromeo. And tonight, of course we are here to celebrate Chinese New Year, and say “Gong Hay Fat Choy”. Unlike Kevin Rudd, that is the only Mandarin that I know.
Isn’t it a special thing for all of us in Tasmania, and I know my parliamentary colleagues will agree, it is a special thing for us in Tasmania to be able to celebrate and embrace so many cultures, so many traditions, so much history, and so much love, hope and aspiration going forward. Because of course, we are all, except for the traditional owners of our land, on which we are meeting tonight, we are all new arrivals here, and we all bring with us our own histories and traditions and hopes and aspirations.
It is a magnificent evening tonight to be able to celebrate the Chinese New Year, and in doing so, celebrate all those histories and traditions that make up Tasmania, built upon the 40,000 years of history and tradition that has come before us.
Thank you.
