Honourable Alderman Damon Thomas[

Well, someone has to start, Master Wang.

When you bring this fruition, we will be very proud to accept such a wonderful institution within our fabric, our society.

It looks very tall, and very colourful, and I think that it will become a beacon for people from internationally and locally to come to.

And you haven’t told us Tony where it is? It looks like it’s not in Collins Street anymore.

Thank you Master Wang, thank you.

It’s always a pleasure to be here, I’d like to also acknowledge your guests from Sri Lanka, the Secretary General.  Welcome to Tasmania.

To the Elders and to the broader Buddhist community, special guests,

It is a very exciting project which maybe something for our spiritual salvation in Tasmania.  There is that very generous donation not only to the community on a financial level obviously, and would be very good for Tea Tree, I think, to have such an important and unique addition to that area of Tasmania.

But it’s also on that spiritual level that it brings such a different element to the Tasmanian community.  I didn’t get a chance to say before, but it is very good to have the community and the academy here.

And from the secretary general, it sounds like there is certainly more to come and certainly with the proposed university, certainly that real chance for us to be a cap and gown town, so that we bring a lot of learning and of course this is your symposium today that chance to share ideas to learn.

And I did like the comment that we are all Buddhists in Australia.  I think that there is so much not only on the local level but internationally that Tasmanian can bring and of course the community can bring to Tasmania when they do come to visit.

So thank you and all the best for your symposium today.

Honourable Sohale Aflatooni

I just like to make a few comments.  As an architect and project manager for the Baha’i Centre of Learning, I might like to share with you just a few of my experience in the last ten years that I have been involved.

You know, in a commercial project, the outcome is very important.   The outcome is to get the project finished as quick as possible so that the commercial return comes back in a form of rental or financial returns.

In a non commercial project or a spiritual project, the process is as important as the outcome.  In fact the process can be considered as outcome if you like.  And the learning that goes into it, the cooperation, the sacrifices...

The bringing people together and try to understand the culture and working with the new culture, new materials, everything that is involved in that process which may take several years.  That, for itself, has the same value as the outcome of the commercial building.

So the more patiently and wisely this process is managed, the better the outcome will be.

Honourable Elise Archer MP[

Thank you.  Putting on another hat of mine I have also got the shadow portfolio of planning and having some local government background.  Of course three years in Hobart City Council you do realise that there are some dare I say obstacles that might appear on the way.

I think going through the process and bringing in the community so that you have community support for a project I think the outcome is achievable. So that wider consultation is definitely something that helps any project to get off the ground and overcome any obstacles that might occur along the way. And I think what Mr Aflatooni said was very wise.

But having said that, from my political stand point, I would like to see the planning system be faster and easier than the system that we currently have, and hopefully that is not too far away.

And certainly won’t be too far away for this particular project.

Thank you.

Well I have to say that I decided to do law and become a solicitor originally and then subsequently I become a law lecturer.  But actually I never wanted to be one.

I wanted to be an architect.

And at that stage my maths was very poor.  I never could cope with maths, so I decided that it probably wasn’t for me.  So nevertheless when I see a project like this and also having been to China, and having been to Beijing, and having seen some of these wonderful examples of China architecture, I think it would be quite amazing really to have something like this here in Tasmania and in Australia. And that is from that perspective.

But also I think it’s not just a structure, a magnificent one of that, but it’s going to be a centre, a centre for Buddhism here in Tasmania and in Australia.  And it will put Tasmania and Australia very much on the world stage for one of the great religion of the world.

I think it is a very, very fine project and I wish you every success. Thank you.

Honourable Tenniswood[

I just think it is the most inspirational and exciting project for Tasmania.  And I think that the time that Tom and I have been coming and sharing with you in this very special place, you already created this magic space right in the centre of Hobart.

And every time we tell our friends what we come and share with you, they say can we please share with you and come? We have already brought our family, our children, I didn’t dare to tell our grand children that we were coming today Master Wang, because the youngest one says that you are his Guru.

He is seven years of age when we brought Sebastian here to your last ceremony, and he said the other day when we had our peace ceremony with our Japanese connection, “I want to go and see Master Wang again and he is my Guru.”

And I think he also for that ceremony asked for his head to be shaved, and he did have his hair shaved for when he came here last time.

But I think the bigger vision and involving the whole of the state in your vision for world peace is just amazing.

Thank you for all your work.
